Yesterday I bought a short block from Rob H in Rochester, my motor seems to be done. So now the big question is to pull it with or without the tranny still attached. I'll be swapping in my dad's driveway, because that's where the car is now. I'll need to buy the gm head gaskets and get some new head bolts. I'll have to buy or borrow a cherry picker because Rob made loading the van way to easy with his! I guess i just need to hear your preferences of with or without the tranny? I've got the t56 and mcloed street twin to hook back up and I assume that would be easier in the driveway than in the car. I can't remember from when i instaled the trans but i vaguely remember it not being that fun.

Adam, Years ago, When I built a Performance V-8 Engine for my 68 Chevelle. I removed the Engine & Turbo 400 Transmission together. If you choose to do it this way, Make sure you have something like the splined yoke from the driveshaft, installed in the tailshaft of the transmission. If not, when you go to lift the engine and tranny out together. Most of your Transmission fluid, Will pour out the tailshaft making a mess of your Dad's driveway. Good luck with your engine replacement, Wutz |

I always did just the opposite that john said and we pulled just the motor. Just make sure u use a jack stand under the oil pan (That is if you have your car high enough.) Or u can us a ratchet strap and a few boards to prop on top of it to keep the front of the trans from tipping down.
If u wanna drop the trans before taking the motor out, its a breeze........wait maybe because ive had trannys out of these cars over a dozen times....lol Good luck! |

My dad get's mad when I make a mess on his Interloc! I might try and pull it all, I had a hard time aligning the tranny and clutch.

Just thought of another question. I went to the store to buy new head bolts, it came to 55 bucks per side. That seems steep, whats the harm in re-using my old bolts?

T56 is easy to put in with the motor,. leave the tranny crossmember out,.set the motor on its mounts, tranny onto floor jack,.. jack tranny into place,. slide crossmember in,.

I did find a better price on head bolts so I ordered them just to be safe.
Thanks for the tip Nick! There is a good bit of room, and the t56 isn't all that big. Almost have everything unhooked, might be ready to yank tomorrow night! |

It was a great weekend Rob! A little windy, I made a huge mess there is oil everywhere! But the old motor came out, actually was a breeze. Just unhooking everything was a pain. Somehow I'll get the ac condenser hooked back up, I may need to get some help from someone with smaller hands though. There was a lot of room to pull it with the tranny attached, now I just need to switch the stuff over to the new motor!

Progress is going good. Just a little more tedious cleaning the old parts to put on the new motor. I didn't realise they added a crank position sensor. So I just have to pull the front cover and add the sensor trigger wheel and the woodruff key. We've got one head on, but I need a better explanation on how to torque down the heads. And our computer died so surfing on a smart phone had been tough. That's my long over due update. Any help with the torqueing would be awesome! Thanks guys!

Though my 96 FSM says - Short at 55 degrees, medium at 65 degrees and long at 75 degrees. Call me if you have any questions. |

Thank's a ton Rob! I scoured the net and couldn't come up with anything! Now if only the tranny would let go of the motor. Time to wiggle and jiggle.
