OK I am stumped...
When I push on the brake pedal, it makes this hissing (like fluid not air) noise.... I replaced the master cylinder.. still there.... car runs pretty well, but does get an occasional sputter/backfire when revving it in park..

the odd thing is when its in park, if I push on the brake pedal, and give it some gas, the pedal "pushes" back up.. IE it feels like the brake pedal is sinking when I push hard on it at idle, but it firms up when I give it gas....
is it the brake booster?? a vacuum leak somewhere??? I found a couple minor ones, some dry rotted hoses etc.... and that helped the stumbling problem a bit... where do I look????

try replacing the plastic valve at the brake booster where the vacuum line hooks to it,,it may be that simple..

Thanks Kevin, I just tried pulling the one out of my 92 parts wagon, and when I pulled the one out of my 9C1, the booster still had vacuum after sitting over night... I played with the one way valve and it seems to be working fine...

Someone on the ISSF said it might be the booster assembly its self, is there any way to test that (i mean even if it's holding a vacuum)

Could it be something with the ABS??? the ABS light has been on for years, I've been meaning to figure it out, just haven't had time....
Thanks
Jonathan

Jonathan,

Also check the rubber grommet that the plastic brake booster fitting snaps into.

Being that Our Chevys are ALL OLD.

Dry Rotted vacuum lines that leak under the hood.

Can cause many engine run problems with an older vehicle.

I'm not sure how to check an internal vacuum leak on a power brake booster unit.
If there was a way to pull vacuum on the unit.
Watch to see if the vacuum gauge holds vacuum or not.

To check the booster-- with the car off pump the brake pedal-- You should get atleast 2 power assists and then the pedal should get hard-- if it goes to the floor-- replace the booster

Thanks guys, it does hold a vacuum, (I pulled the check valve out this morning after it sat over night and it still had vacuum) but I think the pedal goes down when pumped with engine off... I'll have to test it and report back....
Thanks

Thanks! I am quite sure I need a new booster...
I also found a hole in one of the lines to my evap canister, and a crack in the top of the canister... replacing all the lines and canister tonight.... hopefully that will help my random hesitation and occasional backfiring issue....

sorry, I installed the brake booster several weeks ago...

2 nuts on master cylinder, 4 on inside of firewall, and the clip on the brake pedal... very easy..... it took me less than 30 mins start to finish... next time I could probably do it in 15....
Thanks
